26 May will be the fifth celebration of Tekkie Tax Day in South Africa, a campaign which has, through the goodwill of thousands of people, raised more than R22 million.
This year should be no exception and everything is ready for the day all South Africans will dress their tekkies up with Tekkie Tax shoelaces and wear them to show their support for a welfare organisation close to their hearts.
But, what is this day all about? The campaign has united hundreds of welfare organisations across various areas of service delivery. This was done to ensure the public can choose who to support.
The five sectors being supported by Tekkie Tax are:
• Animals
• Bring Hope (older people, families and the poorest of the poor)
• Children
• Disability
• Education
It is described as a fun campaign filled with laughter and crazy outfits, but with a serious undertone, to protect the vulnerable. “Some donations are used for the big things, some for small things, but they are all important things,” said Annelise de Jager, founder and patron of the campaign.
Participating in this day is easy, simply choose a sticker for the sector you want to support, get a funky pair of Tekkie Tax shoelaces and wear your takkies proudly on National Tekkie Tax Day.
The South African Riding for the Disabled (SARDA) in Ruimsig, kicked off their campaign earlier in April, when they hosted a Tekkie Tax Day event at Ruimsig.
The day was filled with fun events, from playing cricket and soccer to face painting, balloon animals to riding the horses and donkeys. There was also a scavenger hunt for the children from Child Welfare and the Alma School for children with disabilities.
The event was also attended by three of the Tekkie Tax Ambassadors – Helene Potgieter, Hilde Lunderstedt and Marlene Toms. Sue Green brought her Joy Dogs along, and together they ensured all the children were entertained.
At the end of the day, everyone was spoiled with pizzas sponsored by Pizza Del Forno, and everyone agreed that it was a day to remember.
