• In 2002, a Nigerian BAC 1-11-500 aircraft crashed into the town of Kano and exploded in a densely populated section, killing 148 people.

• In 1997, Margaret Thatcher took over as Prime Minister of Britain.

• In 1970, three American Kent State University students were shot dead during a protest against the US invasion of Cambodia. Ten more were injured.

• In 1959, the first Grammy Awards were presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

• In 1930, Mahatma Gandhi was taken into British police custody for his role in the Indian Civil Rights Movement.

• In 1932, notorious Mafia boss, Al Capone, began his 11-year sentence for tax evasion in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary.

• In 1929, Audrey Hepburn was born as Edda Kathleen van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston in Brussels, Belgium.
