Update: Repairs still under way at Florida substation

City Power says power might be restored later today

The electricity supply to some areas of Florida, Robertville, Stormill, Fleurhof and Lea Glen should be restored by the afternoon of 26 April.

The Hebbard Street substation caught fire after a transformer exploded on 24 April, causing a lot of damage and resulting in power outages throughout a large part of Florida and surrounding areas.

Technicians were quickly on scene to start with repairs and initially it was said that electricity would be restored soon. Regrettably, they were met with some challenges along the way. “CBI African Cables has had to move to Plan B, which is to try to restore Lea Glen Cable 2, which recently experienced faulting and damage due to vandalism. Unfortunately the last two efforts to restore this cable were not been successful as additional faults occurred,” said Caleb Finn, councillor for Ward 70.

The contractors had to open up an additional 25 metres of cable along Albertina Sisulu Road to join together in an attempt to repair the damage.

Virgil James, City Power’s spokesperson said that the joins were completed early this morning and the technicians were busy with oil work. “This will take about four hours. From there technicians will be doing drop tests, and once this is completed, we will be ready to switch back on. The estimated time of restoration is set at about 2pm,” he said.
