Confessions of a 16-year-old model
STRUBENS VALLEY – Meet Shaelyn Khan, the fashionable local model who is rising to stardom.
Local resident Shaelyn Khan (16) is back home after the experience of a lifetime on the SA Fashion Week women’s runway.
Khan answered a few questions about her memorable experience from 28 to 30 March.

Q Which shows did you participate in?
A On 28 March I modelled for local designer, Ryan Keyes and then for the guest international designer, Chu Yan on 30 March.
Q How did you prepare for a show?
A We rehearsed for two to four hours in the morning. We had a short break and then hair and makeup started at around 3pm for a 7pm show. After hair and makeup… we just chilled backstage and posted on social media. Many of us used this time to eat. We had touch ups before a show and then went on. Each girl wore two garments. There are normally 15 models in a show.
Q What is it like having such a quick change backstage during a show?
A Your change can only take a minute. You do have dressers to help you. Normally, you have people all over you, helping you dress and do touch ups and then you have to fall into line again.
Q What is your facial routine to deal with the heavy and different types of makeup?
A My skin is very sensitive to makeup so as soon as I get home I use a rooibos cleansing lotion before a deep cleanse scrub. I steam my face for fives minutes and then apply a peeling gel. The whole process takes me about 15 minutes.
Q What are the frequently asked questions you are asked as a model?
A Do you eat? Do you have a strict diet or gym plan? Do you get to keep the clothes?
Q In your eyes, what is the biggest misconception about models?
A Not all models are full of themselves. Modelling is a job, it is not all about looking flawless. It is hard work.
