The Wisdom of the Ages

Leadership skills require from a leader to find common goals among members.

In Toastmasters, the involvement of all members in setting plans leads to harmonising group objectives, which is aided and enhanced by effective communication. Leadership skills require from a leader to find common goals among members.

Leadership was one of the talking points as the members of Florida Toastmasters gathered to share some pearls of wisdom about their ideas and to learn from each other.

Under the theme The wisdom of the Ages President Tim Knights was truly delighted to welcome all special guests and visitors.

Toastmaster Elize Ellis set the tone for the meeting by delving into the history of the School of Athens that represents the largest mathematicians, philosophers and scientists from classical antiquity.

Past District S74 Governor Erich Viedge then performed the Induction Ceremony for 11 new members.

Erich created an ambiance that lent itself to pink champagne on ice and the reflection of reality in mirrors on the ceiling.

Erich and his business partner Leandri run a small consulting company in Gauteng.

“Running a small company often means that you have to do the hard things. The things that no one else is doing. The things that scare you. The things that make you wonder how much longer you can hold on. Those are the things that define you. Those things are the difference between living a life of mediocrity or outrageous success. Do the hard things; you may be surprised by how amazing you are,” he said.

Vivien Katzav opened her Ice Breaker Speech by telling members how she grew up in difficult underprivileged circumstances in the Village of Elsies River. For political, diplomatic and economic reasons, it was restricted to coloured people and certain groups and their descendants, including Japanese immigrants – who were classified as ‘honorary white’ – and the Chinese.

Karen Gray shared some Memorable Moments with the members and asked them to think back to some of the highlights of their favourite movie or play. In her speech, she explained that memory actually takes on many different forms.

There was a twist to the Table Topics Session as Craig Ellis repeated his winning speech entitled Colour. He encouraged members to be like Albert Einstein, a man who asked questions never asked before. He found answers never found before and dreamed up ideas never dreamt before.

“He was a man who loved observing, thinking, wondering, figuring and imagining. Dare to love yourself as if you were a rainbow with gold at both ends. Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.”

Tim Knights was awarded the trophy for the Best Prepared Speech.

Dick Hallett was awarded the trophy for the Best Speech Evaluator.

Craig and Elize Ellis advanced to the Area S2 International Prepared Speech and Evaluation contest which was held at Florida Park Tennis Club on Thursday, 30th March.
