Police warn of new ‘dog’ trend

Ask neigbours to assist when investigating.

The West Rand Cluster have noticed an alarming trend with regard to house robberies, said spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst.

Cases reported recently revealed that victims are attacked in the following manner: When their dogs bark the victims leave the safety of their house to investigate and are then overpowered or shot. The exact opposite also happens in that the victims don’t react to the barking dogs at all.

“Dogs are our first line of defence and when they bark we have to respond,” said Ernst.

“If your dog alerts you, please investigate, but never go outside. Inform your neighbour to also have a look, but always observe from inside your home. Alert your security company, neighbourhood watch or CPF to come and assist. Never dismiss the barking.

“In other cases, our residents are careless, leaving doors, windows and even gates wide open. Everyone should take responsibility for their own safety,” she concluded.
