Glover Paddocks Equestrian Park raises R24 000 for 947’s Adopt an Athlete appeal

HONEYDEW – Local equestrian park gives wings to the dreams of Special Olympics athletes.

Glover Paddocks Equestrian Park riders and supporters raised R24 000 to sponsor Special Olympics athletes to participate in the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria from 17 to 24 March.

The money was raised for the Adopt an Athlete, 947 initiative, to sponsor the athletes after their funding was withdrawn.

“It was amazing to raise such an amount in just five short days for these amazing athletes. It was a privilege to meet them and be part of this initiative,” said Glover Paddocks owner, Kerryn Maher.

Tasmin and Kerryn Maher, represented their equestrian park at the Special Olympics send-off at the Midrand Conference Centre, earlier in March.

The send-off was attended by numerous dignitaries and celebrities.

After meeting with all the sponsors and media, the Special Olympics team left for the airport directly after the send-off party to board their flight to Austria.

The team was escorted into the Olympic arena in Austria by Monaco’s Princess Caroline.

South African participants achieved three gold, two silver and five bronze medals, as well as other distinctions in the various disciplines.
