Football without Borders introduces peer coaching

ZANDSPRUIT – Football without Borders facilitates peer coaching to groom young leaders.

Football without Borders wants to foster responsibility and skills in children through peer coaching.

Malusi Nkhumane instructs his peers during a soccer drill.

Both the boxing and soccer programmes within the organisation have selected older children to help coach the younger participants.

Peer coaches are picked for their ability to quickly grasp new concepts and their ability to lead.

Founder of Football without Borders, Michael Mapfunde said with the help of this initiative the peer coaches ensure the organisation does not run out of helping hands.

These young leaders can contribute towards solutions to problems in their community, and when they are older, thety can work towards a coaching licence.

Coach Elia K Dzwowa stands with peer coaches, Malusi Nkhumane and Lisa Gcayiya, and a group of young players.

“They can be role models in the community and have a new perspective on life,” said Mapfunde.

Soccer coach, Elia K Dzwowa, said his peer coaches are an asset as they are able to teach the other children in their own language and can transfer his philosophy in a way they can understand.

Only one girl has been selected to coach boxing.

Njabulo Mntungwa started training under the guidance of Football without Borders in January this year.

Njabulo Mntungwa shows off her moves.

She said boxing makes her happy and she encouraged her peers to start, as it makes you strong and turns you into the person you want to be.

She is happy to help her coaches, even though sometimes it is scary to be in charge of other children.

She aspires to be a professional boxer when she grows up.

Mntungwa explained that other children her age smoked and didn’t go to school.

She encouraged them to rather join the boxing training.
