Voxpop: Mad about glass recycling

ALLENS NEK – Schoolchildren explain their families' recycling habits.

ALLENS NEK – The Glass Recycling Company has kicked off this year’s Annual Glass Recycling Schools Competition and is challenging schools in the area to see who can collect the most glass during this year.

The Roodepoort Northsider asked schoolchildren of Allen Glen High School who make up the school’s representative council, whether or not their family collects and recycles materials, especially glass. Here is what they had to say…

ENTLE VA: We mostly reuse glass jars to hold stationery and plastic bags to line bins.

TIARA CHETTY: While we keep glass to store food, we recycle plastic and newspapers at Brightwater Commons.

LUSANDA GODANGWANE: We drop off recyclables at the Pikitup depot in Rosebank when we go visit my granny and reuse glass for food stuffs.

LAVANIA NAIDOO: We recycle different materials at the bins by the Engen garage in Weltevreden Park, but sometimes save glass jars for decorative purposes.

LESEDI WESI: My family members are recycle freaks who frequent the Hillfox recycle bins, but we normally use glass jars for decorative purposes.

DYREEZE GOVENDER: We reuse glass jars, but those we don’t need we recycle.

SHARON HANYANE: We reuse glass jars for food and recycle plastic.

LEFIKA JONATHAN: We mainly recycle plastic bags and bottles via recycle bins in our complex, but we reuse glass.

RAZEEN LE ROUX: Normally my family recycles paper and plastic, but keeps glass and reuses it.

MPHO ARAWEDZI: There are people in my community who fetch and recycle our glass bottles.
