More rainfall expected, motorists warned to be vigilant
Although there are no storm warnings, Weather SA urges motorists to be vigilant
Heavy rainfall yesterday (2 March) caused havoc on the roads in Roodepoort and surrounding areas.
According to Wayne Venter, a meteorologist at Weather SA, there are no alerts or warnings of severe thunderstorms for today (3 March). “There are however a few storms developing over parts of Gauteng, that we will be monitoring,” he said.
He also said that yesterday’s storm over a large part of Gauteng was actually normal, but because the storm was a slow-moving one, it sat over Johannesburg for about one to one and a half hours, causing a lot of rain to fall at once.
“We are expecting some rainfall for today that will continue into the weekend, and motorists must remember that because of the recent flooding as well as yesterday’s rain, the ground is saturated and dams are full. Only 20 to 30 millimetres more rain can cause flooding in low-lying areas,” Venter said.
Venter urged motorists to be vigilant at all times and never attempt to cross low-lying bridges, or drive through fast-moving water. “Although there are no warnings yet for today, remain vigilant and never play with nature. Don’t wait for us to make a decision on the weather, use your own discretion,” Venter said.
