Vuil Chat bikers are heroes

Helping where others can't

The Welcome family was in tears when Vuil Chat, a team of Davidsonville bikers, renovated their home. This is not the first time Vuil Chat has been involved in such a project, as they renovated a home in the Newclare Flats in Newclarelast month.

Vuil Chat spokesperson Garth Mokoily said they are a group of 21 bikers belonging to different clubs but a brought together by a single purpose.

“We have a WhatsApp chat group called Vuil Chat and last year, we had an idea to donate Christmas hampers and party packs to the less fortunate in the Newclare flats. All of the money used comes from our own pockets, because we realised that each of us is blessed and we have to give back. Being on a motorcycle is dangerous, yet we are still alive.”

The team decided to expand their efforts by renovating a home in Newclare last month and then chose a Davidsonville home for February. Each month, the team will be choosing a family that is in desperate need of help. They have plastered the homes, fixed windows and doors, sealed and painted roofs and walls, refurbished kitchens and various other nooks and crannies that needed taking care of.

“In one home, there was a grandmother living with seven children and relying on pension money to feed them all. That is where we want to step in, because we see that our communities are in need and we can’t just sit back and wait for the authorities to do something when we can. We also supply 30 to 40 food packages to families to sustain them. Although there is a lot of preparation that goes into helping families, seeing them happy and taken care of is worth it,” said Garth.

Joselin Welcome, who was beaming with joy at her newly renovated house, said it is a true blessing to receive such help from the community’s Vuil Chat.

“Just when I needed it the most, they came and provided for us. This gift is truly a blessing and I appreciate it. Some of the children are at school while others are at home, so we always need help.”
