The family affair at this year’s aQuellè Midmar Mile had a happy ending when Kim Erasmus reached the shore and the finish line. The race took place on 11 and 12 February, just outside of Pietermaritzburg.
This was the first time Kim took part in the race with her mother, Sharon Booysen, and Kim’s older sister Joy Erasmus. Dale Rynhoud and Vincent Meyer also swam with them.
Kim started training late last year so she could fulfill her dream of participating in an elite race with her mother. She said, after experiencing the Midmar Mile, that she might become a regular participant.
“This was a dream my mom and I had had for ages, so for us to have completed such a big race is amazing. I am really happy and proud of everyone. I just loved it.”
In her debut swim, Kim crossed the finish line in a time of 42 minutes, identical to the time set by her mother Sharon. Joy, competing for the 12th time, finished the race in 37 minutes with Dale just behind her. Vincent, in his fifth consecutive swim, finished the race in 46 minutes.
