D12 athletes thrill at Championships
D12 Athletics a success despite wet conditions.
The cold, wet and gloomy weather conditions did nothing to hamper the electric atmosphere at the Ruimsig Stadium this week. The sports venue was hosting the District 12 (D12) athletics meet, where the best in the district came face-to-face with one another. Athletes from areas such as Roodepoort, Meadowlands, Dobsonville and Orlando West put it all on the line for a chance to represent D12 at the Gauteng Athletics. There were 96 events, such as javelin, long-jump, discus and shot put, and records went tumbling or were equalled.

In the boys’ section, Panorama Primary School’s Brandon Mutombo broke the U/10 high-jump record of 1,28m, setting a new record at 1,30m. Brandon also finished second in the U/10 70m hurdles event. Panorama Primary’s Jayden Hoskins set a new record of 4,36m in the long-jump event, beating the 20-year-old record of 4,33m set in 1997. Panorama’s boys featured again as Hephzibah Iwuyi equalled the U/10 80m sprint record of 2015.
The girls were not to be outdone, as Weltevreden Park Primary’s Leigh McMorran set a new record of 5:05.26 in the U/13 1 500m track event, breaking the 2002 record of 5:10.40. Laerskool Roodekrans’ athlete Amy Pretorius smashed the 2015 girls U/13 javelin record of 32,66m with an impeccable 33,27m throw. Amy also won two silver medals in the U/13 75m and U/13 200m hurdles events.

Amy’s school-mate, Jordan Binneman, set a 19,47s record in the girls U/12 150m track event, beating the decade-old record of 19,89s set in 2007. Jordan also won a gold medal in the girls U/12 100m sprint.
These qualifying athletes will be working hard to be in fine form for the Gauteng Championships which brings the top athletes in the province’s district together to compete.
