Keep the love for glass alive during Feb
JOBURG – The Glass Recycling Company encourages the reuse and recycling of glass this month.
JOHANNESBURG – During February, the month of love, a great way to show your love for the environment is to get involved in glass recycling.
Even though Valentine’s Day has come and gone, you can still keep the love alive throughout the rest of the month by reusing or recycling your glass jars or glass bottles.
Even recycling one glass jar per week could make a difference to the environment.
The Glass Recycling Company provides five reasons to have a heart for glass this month:
- Glass is made of natural substances
- Glass bottles can be recycled endlessly
- Glass is easily reused
- Glass is 100 per cent recyclable
- Glass is timeless and elegant.
Express your love for glass and your love for the environment by recycling every glass jar or bottle you would usually just throw away with the rest of your garbage. It doesn’t cost you any money and is very easy to do.
Here are some simple glass recycling tips:
- Glass containers, bottles and jars, such as those used for food and beverages, can be recycled.
- Windscreen glass, window pane glass, mirrors, light bulbs, drinking glasses and tumblers, PyrexTM or laboratory glass cannot be recycled with your regular glass recycling as it has different properties to packaging glass.
- Encourage those around you to recycle. Take your children with you and show them how and where to put their bottles.
- Make sure you take back returnable bottles to your retailer. The bottles will be washed and sterilised hygienically by the manufacturer, refilled and reused. These bottles include large beer bottles, certain glass cool drink bottles and even many of the bottles used for spirits and liquor.
- In South Africa, it is not necessary to place different coloured glass into separate banks or to wash glass before placing it into glass banks.
