Did Davidsonville resident abuse Gift of the Givers?
Organisation said they would investigate.
Certain residents in Davidsonville are concerned about whether another resident might have abused the charity of the non-governmental organisation (NGO), the Gift of the Givers Foundation.
According to one complainant, who wants to remain anonymous out of fear of victimisation, a truck branded with the organisation’s name arrived at a house in Manuel Street at about 6.30pm on Wednesday, 1 February. Five hundred pairs of shoes were allegedly delivered to the house and community members were barred from accessing them. It is now alleged that the recipient is selling the shoes.
A representative of the organisation said that it is possible someone rented the truck from the Gift of the Givers Foundation and used it for private purposes, but that they will investigate the incident.
Gift of the Givers Foundation was founded by Dr Imtiaz Sooliman in 1992. It is the largest disaster relief group of African origin. Gift of the Givers has worked in many countries, including Bosnia, Pakistan, Somalia, Haiti, Zimbabwe and most recently Syria. The organisation was recently in the news when a South African photo-journalist, Shiraaz Mohamed, who had accompanied them to Syria, was kidnapped in the war-torn country.
