Does the country impact you?
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Local research psychologist plans a talk on the correlation between the country and our well-being as citizens.
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Do you think issues or happenings in the country affect your own psyche? Research psychologist, Wanda Roos thinks so.
Roos believes that South Africans are a resilient nation but, that on a daily basis, our surroundings impact our psyche. “Everyday it chips away at our well-being and I attempt to make people aware of the negativity and what we can do about it,” said Roos.
She plans on presenting a talk on 11 February at The Barefoot Kitchen, Ngwenya Glass Village, on living a more emotionally resilient life in South Africa, to explain her theories.
“It can be anything from having problems with your landline to bad cellular customer service or having your driveway dug up and left for weeks because of infrastructure,” Roos explained and added, “These events accumulate and can change people.”
Roos’ knowledge of community issues stems from her many years as a Weltevreden Park resident and her various careers. In the 1980s, Roos taught mathematics and biology and then continued to study and work in the industrial psychology space. However, for a large part of her career, she worked for the Johannesburg Zoo, for their information office and went on to establish their education services department and outreach programme.
Now, she feels it is the time for the community to have more self-insight into community issues, especially after the ups and downs of 2016. “I want to share what people can do without spending more time, money and resources to gain self-insight and hopefully have a laugh at ourselves along the way.”
The talk, entitled ‘I’m Choking in my own Country’ will begin at 11am on 11 February. Cost per person is R75 and R55 for pensioners. Cakes and refreshments included. Bookings are essential.
To book, contact Barefoot Kitchen on 011 796 3012 or Sharon on 082 415 3743.
