Successes for new K9 narcotics unit

A summary of the newly launched K9 unit's operations and successes in January

Since its launch in November last year, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) K9 Narcotics Unit has been busy and has had quite a few successes.

One of these success stories happened early in January when they were part of an operation in Florida. According to councillor Carl Mann, a 39-year- old drug dealer was arrested by the JMPD K9 Narcotics Unit. “An undisclosed amount of money, dagga and other drugs were seized. The suspect was taken to Roodepoort Police Station where he was detained for dealing in as well as possession of drugs,” Mann said.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun said he welcomed the arrest and would ensure that more blitz operations would be conducted in the area. “The department will work closely with the police and ward councillors to bring law and order back to the greater Roodepoort area,” Sun said.

During the month of January, the unit conducted numerous operations and made 107 arrests, seized 10 firearms, recovered 542 stolen goods, seized 2 171g of drugs, issued 185 citations and recovered 66 stolen and hijacked vehicles.

The Executive Mayor, councillor Herman Mashaba congratulated the unit on the successes they have had so far and said, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude and congratulations to this unit for the excellent work they are doing as we embark on this road to ridding our streets of this epidemic.”
