Dorah Nomalungelo Mazibuko, better known in the community as Mama Dorah of Siyabonga Dorah’s Ark Children’s Home has passed away.
The ailing 78-year-old caregiver, the heart and soul of the home, breathed her last breath on Wednesday at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. According to her son Sindi Muthwa, Mama Dorah fell ill this week and doctors could not figure out what was wrong with her.
“She had diarrhoea and this left her weak so we rushed her to hospital. She also contracted bronchitis and had trouble breathing so she was put on a ventilator,” he said.
However, this did not improve her health and she succumbed to the illness. Dorah leaves behind her children and her greatest love and passion, taking care of orphaned and vulnerable children. But Sindi added that the community should not be worried about the organisation as it will continue strongly.
“Our mother was taking care of more than 40 children. We have not told the younger ones what has happened just yet, but the older children are devastated. My mom did not only train us, but many others as well, so while her loss is heartbreaking, we will still continue with her legacy. We will not give up on her dream,” he said.
Dorcas Aid’s Lionel Cohen who has worked at Dorah’s Ark said losing Mama Dorah is very sad for the community.
“She was good for the community and did great work. It is sad to hear she was not doing well and I send my heartfelt condolences to the family,” he said.
