Park Run attracts hundreds of runners

Park Run fever hits

It was a sea of colour at Len Rutter Park as 1 000 runners stood at the start line of this weekend’s Florida Park Run (28 January). With the new year almost a month old, many of the runners joined in as part of their resolutions such as keeping fit, taking their dogs for a run or losing weight.

The Park Run’s main organiser Keith Norman is delighted with the turnout and is optimistic that the numbers will grow as the year progresses.

“Usually at the beginning of the year we have many people joining us and its amazing, but once the year starts going, people tend to stay away especially during the winter,” he said.

The Park Run organisers are also looking to make the course more inviting for the community and will introduce a one-lap run to the course.

“Joining the Park Run is free of charge. There is no fee involved at any point. The run is a vibrant community activity which is family orientated. Johannesburg Parks and Zoo has been assisting with keeping the park clean and cutting the grass. We are also appealing to those who want to assist and volunteer at the Park Run to come,” said Keith.

Some runners reached personal milestones this weekend. Juniors Jesse Davids and Joshua Bradbury celebrated their 10th park run while Jerome Jason, Marietta Culpan, Fiona Graham and Daniela Smeaton each celebrated their 50th park run.
