Abandoned animals deserve better

Tanya from Roodepoort writes:

I am so sad to see that once again a puppy had to die because of a pet store. About four years ago, we bought my then mother-in-law a puppy and within a week she developed the parvo virus. Luckily she survived but the pet store never checked when taking in the puppies. I don’t normally buy pets, except hamsters. These poor babies don’t know how to tell you they are sick, and pet store staff are not vets, so they are not worried.

I maintain that no animals should ever be bought from a pet store if you cannot prove vaccination, breeding or papers. In other words, pet stores should get this from the owner and not tell the new owner a lie in order to make a sale. Secondly, and most importantly, it is safer, more humane and more loving if you adopt an animal from a shelter – trust me, I know.

These animals have so much love and will always give it in leaps and bounds. Thirdly, pet shops should only be suppliers of tools to take care of your pets and should be fined for keeping any live animal. And the cherry on top, pet owners should neuter their pets, full stop!

No breeding. Just like our abandoned children in South Africa, who deserve warm, loving homes, our abandoned animals deserve the same treatment.
