Grading success for Shunkenkan

Grading success

Members of Florida’s Shunkenkan Ju-Jitsu recently participated in the annual grading. The event took place at the Tonkinkan Dojo in Benoni and the club took 11 athletes to be graded and qualify for either yellow, orange or green belts. All athletes were tested on the martial arts syllabus and the techniques they have learnt. All 11 Shunkenkan Ju-Jitsu members who were graded were successful and this left Sensei Adrian van der Werken proud of his charges for applying what their have learnt during the year and excel.

Anthony Manuel, Jean Olivier, Tristan Chowles, Noah Ramiah, Saran and Gege Ndamba successfully moved from white belt to yellow belt. Kayla Boshoff moved on from yellow belt to orange belt while JP van Rooyen moved from green belt level 1 to green belt level 2.

“Jujitsu is a traditional martial arts that focuses on self-defence, confidence building and discipline. We teach you how to get yourself out of dangerous situations and how to handle yourself. So to see all 11 members having progressed brings me immense pride and joy,” he said.

This year, the club also plans to start an in-house tournament, which will be hosted every three months. The competitors will be all the members of the club – from beginners and juniors to seniors. This is to foster a competitive spirit in the club while giving more room to work on improving the members of the club. This will help to prepare them for the massive Gauteng Western Championships that will be hosted by the Florida Club. It will not only include competitors from the West Rand but from the rest of the country and as it grows, international competitors will join.

“That is what we are working towards. We will be aiming to host it towards the end of the year, but nothing has been finalised just yet. We want this competition to be of an international standard and we understand the work that needs to be done to get it to that level,” said Sensei Adrian.
