Dedicated police officer laid to rest

A long-serving and dedicated police officer, Warrant Officer Jonathan Montgomery (51), who lost his battle to cancer on 5 January, was laid to rest over the weekend.

Montgomery had served for 20 years as a reservist in the Johannesburg West Cluster team at the time of his death. On 14 January, he was laid to rest in a dignified semi-State funeral ceremony.

The man was described as a good leader who always wanted to lead by example.

Prior to his death, Honeydew police, in conjunction with Johannesburg West Cluster reservists, visited the man to wish him a speedy recovery.

The head reservist of the Johannesburg West Cluster and colleague to the deceased, Captain Troy Laas said Montgomery will be sorely missed due to the pride he took in his work.

“During his years of service, he served a large portion of his time at the Johannesburg Child Protection Unit. He was always courteous and made a good ambassador to the community representing the police reservists in various community projects. He had a good track record in terms of his hours worked and his duties performed. He was also a good mentor to any new students taken on,” Laas recalled.

Montgomery leaves behind his loving wife, Belinda, his Honeydew police reservist son, Christopher, who is following in his father’s footsteps, his daughter Jessica and one grandchild.
