Don’t forget the furry friends at Christmas
Pledge a box for the Santa Cause for Paws project
Humans are not the only ones who love to receive presents for Christmas – dogs and cats love it too!
The ‘Santa Cause for Paws’ project is similar to the ‘Santa Shoebox’ initiative, but with one difference. Where the Santa Shoebox focuses on providing underprivileged children with gifts for Christmas – Santa Cause for Paws focuses on dogs, cats and other animals in need.
This initiative was started in October 2013 – and 2 195 boxes were delivered to the 10 pre-selected Johannesburg and Pretoria charities. 667 boxes were also delivered to charities in KwaZulu-Natal. In the project’s second year, over 2 500 boxes were collected in Johannesburg and Pretoria, 1 100 in Durban, more than 650 in Cape Town and more than 100 in the Vaal area.
The project continues to grow annually – with more than 4 000 boxes collected in Johannesburg and Pretoria last year.
Santa Cause for Paws aims to make Christmas a little more special for cats and dogs by collecting and distributing packs made up by the public to various animal shelters. These Christmas boxes provide the animals with treats they would otherwise go without.
People are urged to go to www.santapaws.co.za to pledge boxes for either a dog, cat, puppy or kitten.
Each box needs to contain five items, including two things yum (food and treat), something warm (blanket or jersey), something useful (stainless steel bowl, dewormer, collar, etc) and something fun (toy for cat/ dog). An additional item for the staff who work at the shelter to say thank you, can also be placed in the box, but it is optional.
When your box is complete, you can drop it off at your nearest drop off point. There are two drop off points in Roodepoort, one in Helderkruin and one in Florida Glen.
For more information on other ways to support this worthy cause, to see the times when completed boxes need to be dropped off and see the beneficiaries, visit their Facebook page or go to www.santapaws.co.za.
