Crime-fighting community a huge success

Various successes under their belt.

The residents of the area bounded by Impala West Street, Koedoebessie Avenue, Ruhama Road and the western bend of Banket Street, have created their own crime-fighting entity known as the Kruin Community.

This entity exists across all the borders of the existing neighbourhood watch structures which are created in terms of Regulation 18 of the South African Police Services Act. The Kruin Community’s legal existence is founded in common law and the Constitution of the Republic.

Within 10 months of its creation, an elaborate communication system was created, day and night resident patroller groups were established, a repeater-based two-way radio system was acquired, water emergency measures and resources were implemented (17 boreholes with a 26-vehicle delivery capacity including a 10 000l tanker) and an Emergency Resource Centre including an ER24 capacity was created.

The most important intervention was however a vehicle sponsored by Apcan Security. The Kruin Community-branded Apcan Security vehicle was unveiled on 2 December. This highlighted the dedicated, coordinated and proactive service the security company is rendering to the Kruin Community, and complements Apcan’s street cameras which have already been installed in the area.

The successes already achieved include the arrest of two suspects on 4 November, in an incident where a reaction officer fought off three suspects who overpowered him inside a residence on Chironia Street. The crime rate has also significantly reduced.

Residents wanting to get involved in the Kruin Community can contact Advocate Deon van Wyk on 084 7888 580.
