Essential first-aid supplies when travelling
Be prepared when travelling to your holiday destination
The holiday season is here and your holiday has been booked and planned. But, are you adequately prepared to deal with unexpected illness or injury while on holiday?
Shalen Ramduth, the general manager of national operations at Netcare 911, urges everyone to have a well-stocked first-aid kit handy when travelling. “In medical emergency situations a well-stocked first-aid kit can make a real difference, as it will serve as an interim resource until professional help arrives. The contents of your first-aid kit should also help you to deal with minor injuries that do not require assistance from healthcare professional such as paramedics or doctors,” said Shalen.
Netcare 911 recommends that your first-aid kit should contain the following items:
– Four packs of sterile gauze
– A roll of hypoallergenic adhesive tape
– Two triangular bandages
– One large and one small crepe roller bandage
– Two large and two small sterile dressings
– Various sizes of burnshield dressings
– Two eyepads with bandages
– A pack of sterile cottonwool swabs
– Assorted sticking plasters
– Antiseptic wipes
– Antibiotic cream
– Pain killers (one pack of paracetamol tablets and one liquid paracetamol)
– Several sachets of a rehydration mix
– Additional supplies of prescription medication
– Tweezers
– Sharp scissors
– Six safety pins
– A face cloth
– A thermometer
– Two pairs of latex gloves
– A space blanket
– A torch and a set of spare batteries
– A list of emergency numbers such as the ambulance, your family doctor, your pediatrician, and so on.
Shalen concluded with the following: “It is especially annoying to fall ill or sustain an injury while you are on holiday, a time when you most want to be enjoying yourself.
It is therefore important to take the appropriate measures to reduce the risk of illness and injury by adequately preparing for unexpected incidents.”
