Festive season crime prevention tips

Teach children what to do if separated from you.

Unfortunately, the festive season means an increase in the already high levels of crime being committed.

Here are some tips to prevent you from falling victim to crime:

• Try to restrict your shopping to daylight hours, and where possible have a friend or family member accompany you.

• Stay aware and alert to your surroundings – a casual glimpse might make you aware that you’re being followed.

• Do not overburden yourself with trying to carry loads of goods when shopping – use a trolley. Freedom of movement and clear visibility are excellent self-protection mechanisms.

• Pick you parking spot wisely. Look for well-lit areas and try not to park next to a larger vehicle in order to give you more time and space to observe what’s going on around you.

• Do not leave an idling vehicle unattended, not even for few seconds.

• Always have your keys in your hand as you approach your vehicle.

• Be aware of the amount of money in your purse or wallet.

• Only carry the credit cards you are going to use.

• Should your kids be with you on a shopping trip, make sure they know what to do in case of being separated from you.

• Always have a photograph of your children on your cellphone. If they do go missing, the photo will go a long way towards helping security personnel to find them.
