Discovery Community Forum (DCF) recently hosted a Domestic Employee Forum to emphasise crime awareness.
The morning event was held at DCF member Sue Blair’s home in Discovery. It was an opportunity for homeowners, domestic workers and gardeners to be made aware of the measures they can take to prevent becoming a victim of crime. Sergeant Ramosa of Florida Police gave an informative talk to all who attended. Victim support counsellor for the DCF, Nadeen Bezuidenhout also gave a talk on the work she does.
Everyone was given a lanyard with a laminated card containing the relevant emergency numbers, as well as a whistle to blow in case of emergency.
These are some of the tips the police provided:
• Staff must not allow anyone onto their premises unless they have called the homeowner for permission. They can phone the Discovery Sector Vehicle 071 675 3777 if they need help.
• They must not use their cellphones or carry cash while walking in the street.
• Homeowners should provide staff with a panic button from local security companies.
• Staff must make sure they are not being followed from shopping trips; if they are, they must contact the police or the sector police at the above number.
• They must report any crime, suspicious behaviour and suspicious activity at the house of their employer to the police.
• Gardeners should keep gates closed when they are working and should not leave tools unattended.
