Update: Residents high-five new dagga legislation

It seems residents have more informed opinions.

Although by no means a scientific poll, the response the Record received on social media regarding the new legislation that will make medicinal cannabis (dagga) legal as of April 2017, has been overwhelmingly positive.

It seems that residents have more informed opinions on par with the international attitude to the herb. Out of the multitude of comments on the article that was published yesterday (24 November), almost 90 per cent were positive. Of course there were the Mother Grundies who missed the point, refusing to see the advantages, as well as the jokers who prematurely got excited thinking they will puff away at the next braai. This is what residents had to say.

• Gert van Rooyen wrote, “Lekker man, going to get high every day”.

• Wayne Sklar said, “So good for our world. And the people. And it will definitely have positive effects. Look at Colorado in the US where crime has gone down a significant amount. It is helping many people with illness. Children who had up to 200 seizures a day have been helped and some now have none. Very positive indeed.”

• Adri Townsend took it one step further saying, “All drugs should be legalised. Go read up what happened in countries where they did this. Being illegal does not stop anyone from using it. But legalising it has many advantages.”

• Theresa Taljaard agreed with the new legislation and wrote, “I am all for it, especially medicinal use”.

• Pho du Plessis saw other advantages in the legalisation. “Dit sal ook veroorsaak dat ander medisyne goedkoper word. Tans kry mens cannabis-olie met ‘n helse gesukkel.”

• Schanania Greef Craner wrote, “Finally. Medical marijuana should have been made available a long time ago for those who need it. Personally I would even agree to recreational use.”

A few were vehemently opposed to the idea.

• Helgardt Oelofse said, “Dit moet totaal verbied word want mense weet nie waar om die streep te trek nie. Gee die pinkie en hulle gryp die hele hand.”

• Heidi Clark wrote, ” Don’t like drugs. Kids end up dead and worse. Why don’t they sell avocado oil instead? I really don’t know what it is about dagga that people get all worked up. It is a horrible, dirty drug.”

Stakeholders will be able to comment on the legislation in January next year and the product should be available by April 2017.
