Black Friday has arrived and it kicked off at a snail’s pace in Roodepoort as shoppers dragged themselves to participating stores to chase specials.
The Record‘s journalists went out to find the madness but were let down. At Westgate Shopping Mall, commuters could be seen jumping out of taxis even before they’d come to a complete stop, and racing to the nearest entrance and chosen shops.

Many could be seen outside with various pamphlets of specials, plotting their adventure through the mall. However, instead of the expected brawls and stampedes, it was relatively safe and orderly at the mall as shoppers queued in front of stores and walked in sedately once the shops were open for business. As the morning crept on, activity in the parking lot increased as more and more shoppers made their way to the mall.
At Witpoortjie Pick n Pay, proceedings were even less rambunctious, with the ATM machines seeing more activity than the doors of the shopping centre. The parking lot and queues inside the centre were quiet and orderly.
At Princess Crossing, the mood echoing that of Witpoortjie, as the parking lot was quiet and very few people were waiting for shops to open.
