Learning conditions less than ideal

Only three taps supplying water to 1 039 learners

Learners attending Fleurhof Primary School are facing numerous issues that make their learning conditions less than ideal.

Councillor for Ward 70, Caleb Finn and the Shadow Member of the Electoral Committee (MEC) for Education, Khume Ramulifho recently made an oversight visit to the school. During this visit, the numerous issues being experienced by the staff and learners of the school were assessed.

The school was established as a temporary structure two years ago and there has been no indication from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) as to when it will be converted to a permanent brick-and-mortar structure. There are only three taps supplying water to the 1 039 learners at the school. The educators and learners also use a bucket toilet system, as there is not enough water pressure to fill the toilet cisterns. One JoJo tank is supposed to supply in the water needs of the learners and staff.

According to Ramulifho, MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi has said on numerous occasions that all schools in Gauteng have proper running water and flush toilets, but, in light of this recent visit to Fleurhof Primary, the MEC has been proven wrong.

“It is deeply concerning that young learners and their teachers are subjected to such inhumane conditions. The MEC must ensure that Fleurhof Primary School has proper running water and flush toilets,” Ramulifho said.

Finn was saddened by the conditions at the school. “It is sad and concerning to see our children learning in such conditions. I am grateful to MPLs Khume Ramulifho and Makashule Gana for conducting the oversight visit. I look forward to the GDE taking corrective steps to ensure conditions improve for these learners,” Finn said. He also confirmed that he was in the process of making enquiries to Johannesburg Water with regard to the installation and payment of water connections.

Ramulifho confirmed that the issues found during their visit, will be brought to the attention of the GDE for comment.
