Baby Sanctuary needs your help
Baby Moses needs your help this festive season
With Christmas just around the corner, charitable organisations are appealing to the community for help. One such organisation is the Baby Moses Baby and Child Sanctuary.
It has been a rather tough year for the organisation, but with Christo and Lanie de Klerk at the helm, it has managed to stay strong. But, after having used the Merle Street home for more than 13 years, the time has come for it to be closed. The reason for this is that the organisation has been running at a financial deficit for about 18 months, and with no immediate prospects, has no alternative but to take such drastic action. The well-being of the six girls in the Merle Street home is still a concern and the organisation is looking for viable alternative accommodation for them.
The decision to close the Merle Street home was not taken lightly, and the organisation tried delaying the matter for several months. It has reduced costs, retrenched staff and implemented a policy of non-replacement.
Baby Moses has also been working on initiatives such as reducing water consumption, and all the homes use the minimum of water, grey water and borehole water where possible. They also have rain-water tanks for rain harvesting and for use in the vegetable patches. They have also been working with the Heart-to-Heart project, which involves businesses using waste material, creating employment, offering therapy for disabled persons and manufacturing a product that can be sold for fundraising.
Baby Moses is appealing to anybody who feels they might be able to help in any way, to meet with Christo and Lanie to discuss any initiatives. The organisation already receives donations of second-hand clothing, various foodstuffs and so on, but is desperately low on funding to cover essentials like water and electricity, telephone and internet costs, petrol for the van and the salaries of 5 caregivers, 4 housemothers and 110 beneficiaries.
