Community participates in clean-up
Clean-up at bird sanctuary a success
The Hamerkop Bird Sanctuary was a beehive of activity recently when community members came together to clean up and beautify the park.
People arrived with shovels, cement, signs and garbage bags, ready to start the clean-up. The first item on the agenda was the placing of benches around the sanctuary. According to André Brink, from the group On Florida, this task required a lot of manpower. “We had to carry the benches a long way, to the places where we wanted them. Once we arrived at the right spot, we used concrete to cement the benches into the ground,” said André. Signs indicating the different routes throughout the sanctuary were also made and planted.
After the hard work was completed, members of the community, together with André and the Ward 84 councillor, Gert Niemand, moved through the sanctuary with garbage bags and did a complete clean-up.
“I just want to thank each and every person who joined us in this initiative for their help. Together we can make the sanctuary a beautiful place,” said André.
