Businessman’s charred body found in vehicle

Man's identity known to Record.

This past Friday (28 October) a businessman perished in his burning vehicle in the cul-de-sac on Pigeon Street, Helderkruin.

According to an Apcan Security reaction officer who was on the scene first, he received the call from one of the company’s clients at about 7.25pm. Since he was nearby he got to the scene within three minutes. On arrival he found the vehicle completely engulfed in flames, and he contacted the emergency services as well as the police.

“I have seen several vehicles burn, but I have never seen a vehicle burn for so long. I found it very strange,” he said.

Police spokesperson Captain Walter Spencer confirmed the incident. “At this stage we expect no foul play but have opened an inquest. We first have to confirm the man’s identity by doing DNA tests,” he said.

He could not confirm reports elsewhere that the deceased’s cellphone, laptop and R100 000 watch were still in the vehicle. The deceased’s body was found on the back seat of the vehicle. The man lived only two blocks away from where the vehicle was found and his wife was on the scene.

The man’s identity is known to the Record.
