National Hermit Day

Enjoy some peace and quiet on #NationalHermitDay

Take the opportunity to take some time to spend alone on 29 October – it’s National Hermit’s Day.

It is a day to retreat to someplace quiet to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle.

A hermit is a person who lives – at least to some degree – in seclusion from society. The word hermit comes from the Latin ‘eremita’, which means ‘from the desert’.

29 October 632 AD is the day Saint Colman died in Ireland. He undertook a seven-year hermitage in the Burren Forest in a cave, and this is believed to be the reason this day was chosen to celebrate National Hermit Day.

To celebrate National Hermit Day, turn off your phone and computer, find a secluded place to go and forget about your worries, rest and relax, enjoy some quiet time, read, write or draw. You can also take a well-deserved nap.
