Snake cause darkness

WELTEVREDEN – Snake makes his way into transformer and causes frustration for many residents.

Residents of Weltevreden Park, Wilgeheuwel, Radiokop, Honeydew and surrounding areas were, yet again, out of power on 19 October from around 5pm until 11.45pm.

What makes this situation unique is that the cause of the power outage could not be attributed to a City Power fault, maintenance issue or cable theft, but by an unwelcome visitor making his way into the transformer of the Christiaan de Wet substation.

Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott said that she contacted the City Power area manager and found out that a snake had made its way into the transformer of the substation. She is, however, not sure if this is the reason for the power outage. “I can say with pleasure that the last few power outages have not been caused by City Power faults.”

City Power spokesperson, Hloni Motloung, confirmed that a dead snake was found in the transformer. “Our depot manager said that it is possible that the snake could have been the cause.” However, he could not confirm this as he is said that he is not a snake expert.

“The snake most possibly came from the field,” concluded Motloung. The snake was removed by City Power and the power was fully restored later in the evening.
