Roodepoort’s own beauty queen

Young model representing South Africa in Tokyo

For the first time in 15 years, South Africa has a representative in the Miss International beauty pageant – and she is only 19 years old.

The Miss International pageant is organised by the International Culture Organisation, based in Tokyo, Japan. The first pageant was held in 1960. The competition is deemed to be one of the big four international beauty pageants, alongside Miss World, Miss Universe and Miss Earth.

Tharina Botes is a Kloofendal resident who has been modelling for four years. During this time, she has won numerous titles, including Miss Gauteng, Miss Queen of South Africa and Miss Rand Show 2015. She has been in Tokyo for the past two weeks, in preparation for this event. Tharina has been rated fourth amongst the other 70 representatives from all over the world in the interview session voting polls.

She is currently being coached and mentored by Valerie Begbie from Vogue Catwalk Models in Roodepoort.

“I am very excited and optimistic about Tharina’s career being a successful one. She has only been modelling for a short time but has achieved so much already,” said Valerie.
