Florida Police deal criminals a blow with various successes

Last week, bragging rights went to the Florida Police Station for various successes they achieved.

First off, good news for those who claim they only hear of arrests but never convictions – detective Warrant Officer AS van den Werken managed to secure a conviction and sentence of 15 years for a 41-year-old house robber. He is one of three suspects who entered the complainant’s house on 5 May 2011 and robbed the victims of their belongings. The intruders entered the complainant’s house, one armed with a firearm and others with tree branches. They tied up the victims and ransacked the house. They took, among other things, four televisions, several wrist watches, jewellery, laptops, cellphones and handbags. The other two suspects are still at large.

Last Thursday (20 October) the Florida Police also arrested two suspects for attempted murder. A Vispol (Visible Policing) vehicle was patrolling at about 8am when they received a complaint from a member of the public about a robbery taking place in the veld near Albertina Sisulu Road. The police reacted quickly and found a witness who pointed out where the suspects were. When the suspects saw the police, they started running, and a chase ensued. The police called for backup and managed to arrest the two suspects who had blood stains on their trousers. They were searched and two cellphones and knives were found in their possession. The victim was taken to the Helen Joseph Hospital by ambulance. The suspects, aged between 27 and 34, were detained for attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property.

Finally, a special operation yielded fruit on 13 October when detectives arrested eight other suspects aged between 19 and 41, for the following crimes, which occurred between 2006 and 2016:

– two for theft of motor vehicles,

– one for theft from a motor vehicle,

– four for housebreaking and theft, and

– one for murder.
