Civil servants and the sound of silence
Is it arrogant contempt for those whose tax money pays their salaries.
It would appear that the powers that be – the many government and local governments institutions such as the police – have an arrogant contempt for the taxpayers, who pay their salaries. They seem to have no grasp of the term ‘civil servant’.
The Record‘s request for investigations into and comment on two cases have fallen on deaf ears, often due to what seems to be an intentionally created bureaucratic maize.
Since first reporting on the alleged motorcycle syndicate in early September the Record has yet to receive a straight answer, in fact any answer, from both the local police, the police cluster and the Provincial Police structure. This after requests by WhatsApp, SMS, emails and phone. It is unclear whether the police are ‘too busy’, sour at the newspaper or covering up the allegations of possible police involvement.
The second case involves police allegedly assaulting a resident at Davidsonville Clinic and the events leading up to the incident. (The victim claimed staff are lazy, arrogant and have ‘banned’ him from the clinic.) Again, for the past two weeks, the police have been asked to investigate the matter and give comment. Silence.
The clinic has also passed the buck to their ‘superiors’, who in turn passed it on to the City’s communication specialist, Nkosinathi Nkabinde, who had the courtesy to send an email with a somehow standard answer this morning. The email read, “The complaint is seen in a serious light, the City of Johannesburg Health Department is investigating it, the outcome will be communicated in due course and as such the City of Johannesburg cannot comment any further at this stage to allow the internal and police investigations that are currently taking place”.
All good and well, even though the police have yet to acknowledge that such an investigation is being conducted.
The Record will continue to relentlessly pursue these matters in the interest of the taxpaying public.
