Passion for politics and students
RUIMSIG – Dr Victoria Graham believes in the democracy of South Africa and says that we have come a long way.
Monash South Africa is known for its brilliant academics – it does not only aim to teach students the fundamentals of their chosen subject, but also aims to inspire the future leaders of this country.
One example is Dr Victoria Graham, a senior lecturer and section head in international and political studies at Monash South Africa (MSA). Graham specialises in democracy studies, diplomacy, land reform issues, comparative politics and foreign policy.
She sits relaxed at her desk, ready to talk about subjects that she is so very eager about. She published a book, Pass or fail? Assessing the Quality of Democracy in South Africa, in 2015. She explained that she assessed the democracy of SA over 30 years. “For a very young democracy, South Africa has done very well.”
Graham explained that there is no concrete way to judge how well SA has done in the elections, but as a whole, one has to establish whether the elections were free and fair. “If there was no corruption, this is usually a good indicator of good democracy,” she added. One of Graham’s other interests involves history. “You can’t predict what will happen in the future if you do not know the past.”
Graham’s biggest concern for the country is the number of young voters during the municipal elections. She explained that it is clear that young people in this country have many concerns, as seen by the #feesmustfall protests. Graham said that she focuses on active citizenship in all her lectures.
“Students have to feel like they’re doing something and be able to make a change.” She said she tries to encourage her students to become active citizens as this may inspire others to do the same. “Even if they just pick up litter it will make a change.” In her view, Graham believes free education in SA is a challenge at the moment, but it is important for students to feel they are being listened to.
It’s clear that this woman has a passion for students and education. “I can’t imagine my life without students,” she concluded, smiling.
