Clinic assault update: Crum steps into the fray

Councillor never reported back.

Since 15 September the Record has unsuccessfully tried to obtain comment from the District Health Services pertaining to an alleged assault on a 50-year-old patient after he was refused his medication at the clinic.

Sean Daniels claimed he was assaulted on 14 September after a feud between him and the operation manageress at the clinic led to her “removing his file” and “banning” him from the clinic. When he insisted on being given his medication she called the police. Daniels claimed they, along with two security officers manhandled him, assaulted and cuffed him.

The clinic staff told the Record they could not comment but would pass the request on to their superior, Stella Uys, the Manager of District Health Services for Region C, and that the deadline for comment would be 22 September. On 23 September, after not getting any response, the Record contacted the new DA councillor for the ward, Rene Benjamin, who said she was meeting with Uys and would pass on the request for comment. Benjamin failed to confirm whether she was successful in her attempt.

Today (3 October) in a desperate attempt to resolve the matter and get comment, the Citizen Relations Urban Management (Crum) department at the Civic Centre was contacted. The ever-helpful Yolanda van Rensburg and Cecil Retief said Uys was not allowed to comment (although no one has indicated this since the initial request on 15 September) but that they would resolve the matter immediately. Within 30 minutes they had put the Record into contact with Nkosinathi Nkabinde of Region C’s Group Communications & Marketing department.

The Record has sent him the details of the complaint and a request for comment, and is now waiting for a reply.
