Constant power outages in Weltevreden Park have left one resident extremely frustrated and worried.
Cynthia Graham, resident of Weltevreden Park Ext 12, said that for the three years since she has lived in the area, the power has always been unstable. Graham provided a detailed list of the logged power outages for this year but said that she has more lists from previous years. According to the lists compiled by the resident, in 2016 alone, there have been 39 outages up until 2 September. On 1 and 2 September, there was a combined total of five outages. In February, there were 10 power outages. July, August and September have had five outages each.
City Power spokesperson, Hloni Motloung said that the power outages in the area over the past few weeks occurred for a number of reasons. “Cable theft and overloading of the network are some of the reasons.”
He added that when fibre optic cable companies are trenching to install fibre, they sometimes damage electric cables. “These ageing cables are susceptible to damage during trenching and they also pose a safety hazard to contractors who may be electrocuted.” Motloung urged residents who experience power outages to log their queries on the City Power Twitter account.
Graham said that she has corresponded with the general manager of City Power and he said he was unaware of her plight and asked her to send him the dates and reference numbers with regards to the area.
