Roodepoort is filled with talented young people who are working hard to get their chance in the spotlight. One of those talented youngsters is Antian Moosa, better known by his stage name Jay Sanchez. Jay has a silky-smooth voice and dance moves that could rival his idol Usher. He categorises himself as a pop, rap and RnB musician.
While growing up, Jay was influenced by Usher as well as a number of other talented musicians such as Craig David, Chris Brown and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.
Jay hadn’t realised he had a gift for music until after he entered a talent competition during high school and was a runner up. The competition served as a confidence booster for the 16-year-old who began to dream of being a successful musician.
“The crowd enjoyed my performance and that made me realise how good I was. I was always confident in my dancing ability but singing came as a surprise for me,” he said.
After high school, Jay participated in numerous talent shows such as Idols SA and X-Factor SA, as well as small shows that honed his skills on stage, performing for a crowd.
Jay, who writes his own music, is working hard in the recording studio, trying to find the perfect sound that will make him a hit, not only in Roodepoort, but across the whole country.
To help him write music, Jay has been learning to play musical instruments such as the guitar, and he plans to also learn to play the piano. He squeezes his guitar lessons in between the fire-fighting course that he’s doing at the Florida Fire Department, and plans to be a hero in the community.
Jay is planning to release an album or mixtape next year, and to include his own music videos.
“I want to give back to the community and give the talented youth a platform on which to create and release music, in the same way as I was given this opportunity”.
