National Cheeseburger Day

Add some cheese to your burgers on #NationalCheeseburgerDay

The world’s favourite burger is honoured on 18 September – with a slice of cheese.

Today is National Cheeseburger Day!

Many theories, dating back to the 1920s, exist about the beginning of the cheeseburger. One story suggests Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working in his father’s sandwich shop, when he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger in an experiment.

There are other claims on the invention of the cheeseburger, including:

– The menu at a Los Angeles Restaurant, O’Dells, listed a cheeseburger smothered with chilli for 25 cents on their menu in 1928.

– Kaelin’s Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky claims it invented the cheeseburger in 1934.

– A trademark for the name ‘cheeseburger’ was awarded to Louis Ballast of the Humpty Dumpty Drive In in 1935.

– According to archives, an application for a trademark on the word ‘cheeseburger’ was made in the 1930s by Gus Belt, founder of the Steak ‘n Shake.

To celebrate, gather your friends and family and grill some burgers – but don’t forget the cheese!

You can also add other ingredients to your cheeseburgers to vary them a little. Try bacon, mushrooms, caramelised onions – and many other things!
