Illegal drain causes concern
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Residents are at their wits' end with a drain that leaks onto the road, causing potholes.
It has been almost a year, but residents of Vale Road still have to use a muddy, potholed road.
Resident Nthabiseng Nthotanyana, said that she is concerned about the condition of the road. “Water has been leaking from a yard of a house, in the road.
“This is causing potholes that make life difficult for drivers and it seems the road cannot be patched because of the permanent pools of water.” Another resident in the area pleaded for help. “It has been like this for probably a year,” said the resident who wished to remain anonymous.
Upon investigation, it seemed as if the water was leaking from a makeshift drainage pipe at a home.
Bertha Peters-Scheepers, operations manager of communications and marketing at Joburg Roads Agency (JRA) thanked Roodepoort Northsider for bringing the matter to their attention. “JRA went to investigate the site and it concluded that the subsurface French drain in Vale Road was installed by the property owner,” said Peters-Scheepers.
She added that JRA will request JMPD to issue a bylaw notice to the owner for removal of the drain which illegally discharges water onto the road surface.
“The JRA encourages residents to report issues concerning road and storm water issues,” concluded Peters-Scheepers.
