Yuck, what’s that smell?
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Resident puzzled over a bad smell that permeates his home.
The smell of burning in Weltevreden Park is causing concern for a resident of Skateboard Street.
The resident, Mike van der Walt, said the smell is not like burning grass but a smell of waste being burnt. “I know veld fires and this is not the smell,” Van der Walt said.
He initially said the smell came at about 8pm or 9pm, but on 7 September the resident said he woke up with the smell in his home.
Van der Walt added that he suspected it comes from the Panorama Pikitup Garden Centre down the road on Jim Fouché Drive, but is not sure.
Upon investigation, at midday the smell was present.
Spokesperson for Pikitup, Jacky Mashapu, said that disposed materials are not allowed to be burned at any Pikitup Garden Centre. Van der Walt will investigate the matter further to find out whether or not there is any illegal burning taking place.
Comment from the Director of Environmental Health Services, Peter Manganye, on the health risks of burning in a neighbourhood, is awaited.
Van der Walt concluded that since the initial complaint, the smell has become less frequent.
