Ever wondered how SA ID numbers are composed?

First six digits are your birth date.

Most of us know our ID numbers off by heart, but not many know the meaning of the digits after the first six indicating your birth date.

This is how The Department of Home Affairs compose your unique 13-digit ID number:

• The first six digits are your birthday, so if your date of birth is 1 April 1969 the first six digits would be 690401.

• The next four numbers identify your sex – 5 000 and above is male and below 5000 is female.

• The next number is the country’s ID. If it is South African it is a 0 and if not, a 1.

• The second last number used to identify race, but now with the last digit this is a check sum that passes the Home Affairs algorithm that makes the ID number valid.
