National Teddy Bear Day
Get Teddy out of the cupboard and make him the centre of attention on #NationalTeddyBearDay
The teddy bear is one of the most popular toys for children and it holds a special place in many adult hearts too. Some of us still have our special cuddly teddy from our childhood.
This lovable stuffed animal has a day all of its own called National Teddy Bear Day which is celebrated annually on 9 September.
Today is the perfect day to celebrate your childhood friend by taking him out of the cupboard and making him the centre of attention.
The teddy bear was created in 1902 by the toy-maker Morris Michtom after the American President, Theodore Roosevelt, refused to shoot a captured bear cub while hunting.
Michtom wrote to the president asking permission to name his new toy the ‘Teddy Bear’.
Many teddy bears have become famous over the years, including Paddington Bear, Rupert the Bear, Pudsey Bear and of course (and never to be forgotten!), Winnie the Pooh.
Today is the perfect opportunity to celebrate Teddy’s favourite activity by arranging a get-together with friends or family and having a teddy bears’ picnic as immortalised in the 1907 classic song ‘The Teddy Bears’ Picnic.’
Remember your teddy bear and use #NationalTeddyBearDay to post on social media.
