Touch rugby summer league returns

The West Rand Touch Rugby League begins its new season

The winter season is officially behind us and the summer season sees the return of the West Rand Touch Rugby League. The league’s winter season concluded last month and the new season is just days away from kicking off.

The winter season had 16 teams participating across three divisions. In the Super League, Staalballe were crowned the champions, beating Proes Apies in the finals. Posduiwe were victorious in the First Division, overcoming Veterans in the final while Barbarians triumphed over Redge for the Second Division title.

League organiser Kobus Kruger was pleased with how the season went.

“The season went well, with the players’ family and friends coming out to support the games despite the cold weather at times. Now we are ready to start the season again and with the weather warming up, we are hoping more teams will sign up and have a fun night out playing rugby,” he said.

The league’s format will remain the same, splitting teams into divisions based on the skills level and fitness of the teams. Teams consist of a maximum of 10 players and a minimum of five.

In the Super League, elite players and teams compete at a high level.

In the First and Second Divisions, teams playing for social reasons and to have fun compete against each other.

The first week will be grading week while weeks two to eight will see teams playing for a spot in the top four.

In the ninth week the semifinals will be played, followed by the finals the next week.

The 10-week league starts on 14 September and matches will take place on Wednesday evenings from 7pm at Sterkfontein Heritage Lodge in Rant-en-Dal.
