Families got active and reconnected with each other at the Bonitas Medical Fund 2km Family Fun Walk, held recently at the Florida Albion Football Club. The aim of the day was to encourage families to spend 67 minutes reconnecting, getting active and having fun together. More than 1 000 people of all ages enjoyed the sunshine as they meandered through the 2km Heartbeat course, which was filled with attractions such as tooth fairies, stilt walkers, balloon sculptures and competitions. Other activities included face painting, wheat-grass shots for the adults, and a quiz.
The day was the culmination of a School Safety Programme, recognised by the Department of Education and run by Active Education in association with Bonitas. The programme incorporated a 45-minute interactive talk addressing various safety issues such as stranger danger, drownings, fires, basic CPR and social media safety for older pupils. The programme was recently rolled out to 3 000 children from Grade R to Grade 7, at five schools in the Roodepoort area. In addition to the safety talks, the ER24 number was highlighted as the number to call for support in emergencies and ICE (in case of emergency) cards were given to children to complete and carry.
