What is an MMC and what does the various departments do?

With local government elections now over, it is time for municipalities to assemble a government.

In the City of Johannesburg this includes a mayoral committee.

A mayoral committee consist of 10 members that head different departments within the City. A municipal council has a number of different responsibilities.

These include making the laws and policies, providing financial oversight, planning the budget, and hiring the municipal manager. It is also responsible for ensuring that the municipal administration fulfills its duties to the community.

In the City of Johannesburg a member of the mayoral committee (MMC) will head one of the following departments:

– Community Development

One of the largest departments in the City, “it is responsible for overseeing the well-being of all of Joburg’s inhabitants, catering for the physical, emotional, mental and artistic and cultural needs of its people”.

This department works with Joburg’s Emergency Management Services and the Metropolitan Police Department.

– Health and Social Development

The department oversees waste management, parks, the zoo, power provided, nature preservation, air, water, land and noise pollution.

– Economic Development
